Black Mountain Project is an Austin contemporary art platform founded by artists Adrian Aguilera, Betelhem Makonnen, and Tammie Rubin. The 250 sq.ft micro space is located within the Canopy Art Complex. Each of the three artists is a noted practicing artist active in the Austin art community. Adrian Aguilera and Betelhem Makonnen’s exhibition “yo soy aqui/ i am here” was the winner of Best Group Gallery Exhibition, 2018 Austin Critics Table Awards, while Tammie Rubin’s exhibition “Before I Knew You I Missed You” was the winner of Best Solo Exhibition, 2017 Austin Critics Table Awards. Each artists’ profession is arts related, Makonnen is currently an arts festival curator with Fusebox Festival, Aguilera is an art registrar and art handler, involved in exhibition design and handling for local art institutions such as Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, the Visual Arts Center, and the Mexican American Cultural Center. Rubin is an art professor of Ceramics and Sculpture at St. Edward’s University. Makonnen has a BA in History and Literature of African Diaspora from the University of Texas, and is currently completing a M.F.A in Studio Practice at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago Low Res Program. Rubin completed her MFA in Ceramics at the University of Washington, and a BFA in Ceramics & Art History from the University of Illinois. Aguilera has a BFA in visual art from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Monterrey, México.
